How to Play Wordsy

Find the secret word through semantic similarity

The Objective

Your goal is to guess the secret word by typing words and receiving feedback based on their semantic similarity to the target word. The closer your guess is in meaning, the better your rank!

How It Works

1. Make a Guess

Type any English word and press Enter. The game uses advanced word embeddings to understand the semantic meaning of your guess.

2. Get Your Rank

Each guess receives a rank from 1 to 50,000+. The lower the rank, the closer you are to the target word:

  • Rank 1 = You found it! 🎉
  • Ranks 2-50 = Extremely close (green)
  • Ranks 51-500 = Getting warm (yellow)
  • Ranks 501-2500 = Lukewarm (orange)
  • Ranks 2500+ = Cold (red)

3. Refine Your Strategy

Use the color-coded feedback to guide your next guesses. Your guesses are sorted by rank, so you can see which words are closest.

Tips & Strategies

  • Start broad: Begin with common category words like "animal", "food", or "emotion" to get your bearings.
  • Use context clues: If "ocean" ranks well, try related words like "wave", "beach", or "fish".
  • Think semantically: The game understands meaning, not just spelling. "Happy" and "joyful" will have similar ranks.
  • Use hints wisely: Hints show you words with better ranks, but try to solve it yourself first for a better score!
  • Learn from patterns: Over time, you'll develop intuition for how words relate semantically.

Understanding Semantic Similarity

Unlike traditional word games that focus on spelling or letters, Wordsy uses AI-powered word embeddings to understand the meaning of words. This means:

  • Synonyms will have similar ranks
  • Related concepts (like "king" and "queen") are considered close
  • Words from the same category tend to rank well together
  • Even abstract relationships (like "doctor" and "hospital") are recognized

Scoring

Your final score is based on:

  • Number of guesses: Fewer guesses = better score
  • Time taken: Faster completion = bonus points
  • Hints used: Using fewer hints improves your score
